What We Do

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles matches adult volunteers (Bigs) with kids (Littles) facing adversity to provide professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that have a measurable and transformative impact on the lives of our youth, our mentors and our community.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A MENTOR?

Being a mentor is about starting a consistent friendship and inspiring positive change to empower children to believe they can achieve what they didn't think was possible. You can simply incorporate your Little into your everyday life: play sports together, picnic in the park, take your dog for a hike or go to the beach. Being a Big will be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you do, while also being a force of change in our community.

How Do Bigs And Littles Get Matched?

Common Interests

We spend time getting to know Bigs and Littles to make a good match and lasting friendship. Do you both like sports, music or surfing? We look for things you have in common so you will always have fun together.

How Do I Become A Mentor?

Community

Once matched with your Little, our involvement in your relationship is just getting started. We're always on hand to provide support every step of the way. You'll also be connected to our community of Bigs through a private Facebook group, agency-planned match events, and outings with other Bigs.

It's #NewMatchMonday and we'd like to introduce you to Little Brother Gabriel & Big Brother Benjamin! We inquired about what Gabriel was most looking forward to as a mentee and he said, "I'm most excited about what my Big Brother does for work. I like art and want to make short films with him, paint and fly kites!"

Our team prides itself in making matches based on compatibility and common interests - we're excited to see what Benjamin & Gabriel create together as a match!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles with Micki L. Jackson.

Our fourth #MatchChronicles photoblog profile belongs to Big Sister Micki & Little Sister Ayanna! These darling ladies have been matched 1.5 years. Let's get to know them a little better...
--
Ayanna: 9th grade
Micki: Actor & Dancer (catch her cheerleading for the Los Angeles Rams!)
--
We asked them to describe each other in three words and Micki said her Little is sarcastic and hardworking before Ayanna interjected saying, "make the last one true, not just positive," so Micki chose: introverted. Ayanna then described her Big as silly, hardworking, and then cracked herself up by saying, "and petty." :)
--
Ayanna was quiet at first, but as they developed a deeper relationship, she started opening up and speaking freely. Now she says it feels natural for them to communicate and laugh together.
--
They choose outings perfectly paired with their artistic sensibilities. Anything from ice skating to pumpkin carving to escape rooms to art centers - the best of LA!
--
The bond they've developed is a true sisterhood that goes far beyond blood. They both consider it a blessing to have the other to talk to because they offer different perspectives and opinions.
--
Exhibiting the true magic in mentorship, Ayanna told us that Micki showed her how to make a plan to accomplish what she wants in life. She said, "she taught me to try."
--
Having the support to keep trying even when it's difficult can make all the difference. We love that Micki & Ayanna have chosen to be there for each other through every challenge and every win. We'll be sharing their stories of growth with you throughout 2017.
