What We Do

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles matches adult volunteers (Bigs) with kids (Littles) facing adversity to provide professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that have a measurable and transformative impact on the lives of our youth, our mentors and our community.

What Does It Take To Be A Mentor?

Anyone can be a mentor. It is about starting a consistent friendship and inspiring positive change to empower children to believe they can achieve what they never dreamed possible. You can simply incorporate your Little into your everyday life: play sports together, picnic in the park, take your dog for a hike or go to the beach. Being a Big will be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you do, while also being a force of change in our community.

Maybe it's lending a helping hand at an animal shelter. Maybe it's feeding the homeless in your neighborhood. Maybe it's paying for an extra coffee so the next person in line sips with a smile. Maybe it's simply listening to someone you love tell a story.

Whatever "it" is, we encourage you to do it well and do it often.

"In celebration of Chinese New Year, my Little got a red envelope with $5 in it from my mother-in-law as a symbol of good luck and fortune. Upon receiving it, my request to her was to keep it and only use it for something special, as I know it could have easily been spent on random stuff.

When her school offered an opportunity for students to donate to local charities, all on her own, Jocelyn decided to donate her $5." #LittleMomentsBigImpact

Big Sister Cynthia & Little Sister Jocelyn are shining examples of how good things can grow when you take what you've been given and share it with others.

Happy Earth Day, dear friends!

When Walt Disney co-founded Big Brothers back in 1955, he knew how important it would be for our young men growing up without fathers to have a positive male figure in their lives.

The same is true today for our Little Brothers & Little Sisters. We challenge you to leave a legacy. GoBigLA.org

Little Brother Jorge is a high school senior and member of our BBBSLA Workplace Mentoring Program.

"My family is the main source of energy in my life and my father has always encouraged me. He doesn’t read or write and that is why he knows what it means to have an education. During my first summer in the USA, I worked with my dad as a construction worker on the USC campus. As we worked, I would look at the buildings and find myself staring at the college students, thinking how great it would be for me to study and have a career just like them. I can clearly remember telling my dad, 'Right now, I am just building what I am going to use later. One day, I will study in this building or even have my own office in it.' I still believe those words.” -Jorge Juarez Duarte

We believe those words, too. Last Sunday, Jorge received a $10,000 BBBSLA Scholarship to attend USC Riverside, where he’ll pursue a career as an anesthesiologist.
