What We Do

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles matches adult volunteers (Bigs) with kids (Littles) facing adversity to provide professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that have a measurable and transformative impact on the lives of our youth, our mentors and our community.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A MENTOR?

Being a mentor is about starting a consistent friendship and inspiring positive change to empower children to believe they can achieve what they didn't think was possible. You can simply incorporate your Little into your everyday life: play sports together, picnic in the park, take your dog for a hike or go to the beach. Being a Big will be one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things you do, while also being a force of change in our community.

“Once, Hassan mentioned in passing that he was going to be in a theatre performance at school. He said, ‘No big deal, but you can come if you want.’ I had a busy week at work, but couldn’t stop myself from watching him perform. It was an experience I will never forget. When he came out on that stage, I saw his eyes begin to scan the auditorium, seat by seat, row by row, until at last he saw me, realized that I had cared enough to be there for him, and he smiled. I didn’t appreciate that it could mean the world to him. And it wasn’t until the performance ended that I realized that each and every other child there had someone clapping for them, waiting for them afterwards to say, ‘great job!’ And as we walked out of the auditorium together, I found that I was that person.” #LittleMomentsBigImpact #ThrowbackThursday #TBT #BeAMentor

Tom CaporaleSuch a touching story. Each of us Bigs have that one moment that stands out over the many rewards we receive from our Littles.

"The LA Rams game was Sky's first ever football game and he loved everything about it. The most memorable moments for Sky were watching the Torch being lit prior to commencement of the game and all of the fans going crazy each time the Rams scored."

"For me, it was when I met a former little brother who was part of the program in Florida many many years ago and he told me what we are doing to support our littles made the biggest impact on his life."

"This opportunity is truly inspirational and I hope Sky and I can enjoy many more 'first-time' outings throughout our Friendship."

“I finally have someone to talk to when I have guy questions.” Congrats to our #NewMatchMonday Paul and Jaheim. We have a lot of boys who need a positive male role model to look up to. Not everyone has the time to mentor. And if that’s you, then you can still get involved and help kids on the waiting list get a Big Brother by donating at GoBigLA.org ... See MoreSee Less

“Mya loves every Disney princess, but Rapunzel is her favorite. Before being a Little, Mya was, in some sense, Rapunzel with short hair. She was never exposed to the great outdoors as a child; she had never explored the heat of the desert, felt the waves of the ocean or ever touched snow. I was there to see her eyes light up the first time she breathed in the desert’s heat, took her first step in the ocean water and skied down her first slope. Those memories will never leave my mind. It gave me a sense of true purpose in life.” #LittleMomentsBigImpact #FBF #BeAMentor ... See MoreSee Less
